"A Good Job."
The importance of this theme became inescapable as Judi learned first-hand the realities of Human Resources management over her ten years hiring and evaluating hundreds of employees while working closely with leadership in Fortune 100 companies.
Judi returned to Ann Arbor to complete doctoral requirements for a Ph.D. She pursued research in the field of motivation, focusing on studying the characteristics of work that motivate. A "good job" came to signify a job comprised of duties that facilitate successful outcomes leading to employee satisfaction with a job well done.
Under the guidance of professors at the Ross School of Graduate Business Administration at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and as a result of mentoring by Dr. Stanley Seashore, Judi studied all aspects of work productivity, earning a doctorate and a place in the world of researchers and practitioners. Judi's work confirmed that If caged in narrow, restrictive jobs and confining work environments, people were unenthused and did not perform to potential. People simply do not thrive in jobs that under utilize capabilities; they simply leave otherwise good companies, rejecting career stagnation and limited opportunities to excel.
Why is I-O Psychology Meaningful?
Industrial-Organizational Psychology is the field that promotes productivity studies and programs of intervention that develop the potential of people and organizations. The field was formalized over 150 years ago during the Industrial Revolution. It began with the development of time and motion studies; the first method of quantification used to improve human productivity. The field gains growing importance and sophistication as time passes and as jobs and workplaces become fast-paced and the workforce becomes better educated.
